Electron inelastic mean free paths and surface excitation parameters for GaAs

چکیده
Surface excitation parameters and inelastic mean free paths of electrons are of importance in the analyses of surface sensitive electron spectroscopies. When probe electrons are near the surface of a solid or the interface of an overlayer system, electron inelastic mean free paths become depth-dependent. These mean free paths and surface excitation parameters were calculated for electrons crossing the surface of GaAs. Calculations were performed for both incident and outgoing electrons by the use of a dielectric response theory. Applications were made to estimate the elastic backscattering intensity of electrons at different emission angles using the Monte Carlo simulations. Good agreement was found between calculated results and experimental data on the ratio of the elastic reflection coefficient for a GaAs sample relative to a Ni reference. Such a ratio was used to determine the effective electron inelastic mean free paths in GaAs by employing the surface excitation parameter obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. Surface excitations in surface electron spectroscopies studied by reflection electron energy-loss spectroscopy and elastic peak electron spectroscopy.
Surface excitations, in addition to bulk excitation, undergone by signal electrons in surface electron spectroscopies, such as Auger electron spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, play an important role in the formation of electron spectra. Those inelastic scattering processes not only induce decay in the peak intensity, but also form background appearing in the lower kinetic ener...
متن کاملProbing bulk electronic structure with hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission.
Traditional ultraviolet/soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) may in some cases be too strongly influenced by surface effects to be a useful probe of bulk electronic structure. Going to hard X-ray photon energies and thus larger electron inelastic mean-free paths should provide a more accurate picture of bulk electronic structure. We present experimental data for hard X-r...
متن کاملMeasurements of electron inelastic mean free paths in materials.
We present a method for determining inelastic mean free paths (IMFPs) in materials using high-accuracy measurements of x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). For electron energies below 100 eV, theoretical predictions have large variability and alternate measurement techniques exhibit significant uncertainties. In this regime, the short IMFP makes photoelectrons ideal for structural determinat...
